Repositioning CruisesIf you are looking for a bargain cruise, you should really look into repositioning cruises. Did you ever wonder why a particular ship sails in Alaska for part of the year and then the Caribbean for another? Well, repositioning cruises occur when the weather changes in the autumn and spring seasons. Consider it the cruise line version of a migration! So as to still maintain a profit while moving these ships to a different climate, many cruise lines offer repositioning cruises. For instance, you might find repositioning cruises through Holland America in which they are moving their ships in Alaska in the fall to the warmer Caribbean. You will enjoy the same amenities aboard the ship – great food, service and accommodations. In the April and May months, you will find repositioning cruises through Royal Caribbean that are sailing from domestic ports in the United States to European destinations. Costa repositioning cruises in South America start migrating to Europe in the early spring to take advantage of the tourist trade at that time. Several ships in the Norwegian cruise line have repositioning cruises as well in April and May. Some of the Norwegian ships are doing transatlantic repositioning cruises as are some Celebrity cruises, Seabourne, Disney and other Royal Caribbean repositioning cruises. On the whole a reposition cruise ship does not stop in many ports. Mostly these fall and spring repositioning cruises stay out to sea for up to two weeks at a time. These longer cruises and lack of ports of call are both considered benefits and drawbacks. For those people who enjoy the ocean and would hardly get off the cruise ship for a normal trip, a repositioning cruise is optimal for them. As for the length, up to two weeks is a long time and most people only get a week’s vacation. Repositioning cruises are cheaper. Cruise lines like them because since you are not spending time on a shore excursion, you are spending more money aboard the ship! You may end up with a higher bill than you anticipate with all the extras you decide to try. There is a significant downside to repositioning cruises. Because they don’t depart and return at the same port, you will have to determine your own transportation to get you home. So if you chose a repositioning cruise in which you had to fly out to depart on a cruise, you will have to schedule another flight or alternate means of transportation to get you back from the last cruise destination port to home. Unless you can cash in frequent flier miles or can find cheap flights, your cheap repositioning cruises just got a little more expensive! That is the biggest aspect to consider with repositioning cruises.
